When it comes to publishing one’s research, it is difficult to know what kind of strategy to adopt, and researchers in the early stages of their careers may end up feeling overwhelmed by the various approaches to publishing in academia. Additionally, the publication process itself has changed significantly in the last decades, and what seemed promising then is not necessarily guaranteed to lead to success now. In this roundtable, we will bring together researchers from different departments at various stages in their scientific careers to discuss pressing questions and insecurities of early career researchers with respect to publishing. Participating discussants are Marius Busemeyer (Political Science), Anika Lloyd-Smith (Lingustics), Almuth Scholl (Economics) and Felix Wolter (Sociology). The roundtable is chaired by Thomas Kurer.

Possible questions include:

Should I focus on producing lots of publications or spend more time on putting out a few good articles? How important is it to publish during my doctoral studies, or is it better to save some projects for my Post-Doc phase? How important are collaborations with others in comparison to single authorships, and what role do the number and the reputation of my co-authors play? Is reviewing articles for professional journals beneficial to my career at this stage, or does it take up too much time? What is the usual submission process for journal articles, and how long does it generally take until the final product is published? At what level and focus of journal should my publications as an ECR aim? Is it better to aim at journals with high rankings from the outset, or should I focus on venues where my chances of acceptance are higher? Etc.
