From climate change to COVID-19 to rising inequality and social conflict – never have scientists been more in demand as experts, explaining crises and counselling politics and the public on how to deal with them. Outside of these high-profile issues, too, there is a growing awareness among researchers that reaching out to the public is an important part of their jobs, and of the role of science in society. What’s more, it can be very fulfilling and inspiring to open up the academic “black box” in this manner.
We cordially invite you to join the discussion and learn more about science communication in our upcoming roundtable. We have invited two highly experienced journalists, Kia Vahland and Caspar Dohmen, who are currently staying with the Cluster as Journalists-in-Residence. They will debate with two Cluster researchers, Katrin Schmelz and Wolfgang Seibel, who are actively engaged in science communication, and Paul Töbelmann, the Cluster’s science communication officer. Together, we will discuss questions such as:
- Why should I communicate my research to the wider public? What is the benefit?
- What kind of topics are of interest to the media and the wider public?
- What is the best way to contact the media and place an issue on the agenda?
- How do I handle media inquiries? What is expected of me, and how can I best prepare myself (e.g. for a radio/TV interview)?
- How do I prepare information for easy processing by the interested public, politicians and staffers?
- How do I handle negative feedback and backlash?
The event will take place in a hybrid-format. A Zoom-link will be sent to all Cluster members shortly before the event. In Y213, there will be space for a limited number of attendees. 3G rules apply.
