Once social distancing measures are rolled back, the use of personal movement and contact profiles (such as through a tracing app) to contain the coronavirus capture the attention of the public more and more. So far, there is very little scientific evidence to predict how people will react to encroachments upon their privacy when there is no notable disadvantage for them, or even when the information gathered is to their benefit. How do the Germans perceive the possibility of their personal data being tracked like this? Does it make a difference if the data can only been used after express permission has been given? Indeed, using data without permission is usually perceived as less bearable. People are more prone to tolerating privacy violations, however, if any data gathered is used for infection warnings for themselves or others than if the way this data is used remains unclear.
