Report on the quality of teacher training
On 8 December 2023, the "Ständige Wissenschaftliche Kommission" (SWK) of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs presented its new report "Lehrkräftegewinnung und Lehrkräftebildung für einen hochwertigen Unterricht" (Teacher recruitment and teacher training for high-quality teaching). Claudia Diehl, co-speaker of the Cluster of Excellence "The Politics of Inequality", is a member of the SWK and contributed to the report.
The "Ständige Wissenschaftliche Kommission" (SWK) is the independent scientific advisory body of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK). In their new report, they recommend science-based and clearly structured qualification systems for teachers during all training and professional phases. The aim is to ensure the quality of training in the long term and to recognise a potential shortage of teachers at an early stage: "However, it is also important to determine the corresponding requirements in the long term and on a solid basis," explains Claudia Diehl, Professor of Microsociology at the university and co-author of the report. There is also a new model that should enable a further route into the teaching profession. In order to standardise the special regulations of the federal states in future, the SWK recommends a Master's degree course followed by a preparatory service.
