This event is part of an event series „Early Career Training“.
Whether Plan A or Plan B, it is inadvisable to enter the current job market without having some idea of what careers outside the traditional academic track are available to Early Career Researchers with PhDs and experience in the social sciences, not to mention how one should go about applying for jobs of these kinds. However, even if one knows something about the various (non-academic, post-academic, or alternative-academic) career opportunities available, it is not always entirely clear how someone with an academic background can get their foot in the door in these fields. Quite often, the application procedures, required documents, CV formats, and hiring/interview practices for non-academic jobs differ radically from what one is familiar with in academic contexts. Something similar can be said for employer expectations. Therefore, it is important to develop a few basic strategies for approaching these alternative markets.
This roundtable will include representatives from Academic Staff Development and the Office for Equal Opportunity, as well as perspectives from individuals with PhDs in the social sciences and related fields who have made their way outside of the traditional academic track. Panelists will discuss concrete strategies for pursuing non-ac, post-ac, and alt-ac careers and will take questions from interested ECRs.
The discussion will take place on Zoom, all Cluster members will receive a link by email. If you are not a member of the Cluster, you can request the link by email at methodshub@uni-konstanz.de.
Participation: Cluster members, interested researchers from the University of Konstanz
