This event is part of an event series „Methods Hub Training “.
In this roundtable on methodology, we will discuss the analytical status of comparison in comparative social science research, reflecting on what country comparison actually entails and how it is theorized. Specifically, we focus on internationally comparative work. Our panellists will discuss aims, advantages, and challenges of working comparatively. Issues include case country selection, generalisability and limitations. We also discuss how comparative scholars can address the insightful intervention by postcolonial scholars such as Gurminder K Bhambra who have argued that we need to move away from methodological nationalism, and acknowledge the imperial and colonial histories of contemporary nation states. Our panel includes scholars with extensive experiences of conducting comparative research, in the disciplines of political science, economics and sociology. They have compared countries in the global North and South, using qualitative data, surveys and experiments.
