Loopy loops and sharky sharks
This study aims at decoding collective hunting strategies of blacktip reef sharks and counter-responses by fish schools in Maldivian coral reefs using advanced drone technology and computational analysis. Building upon a promising 2023 preliminary data collection, a 2024 extended field study is proposed to capture high-resolution drone videography analyzed using modern computer vision tools for detailed behavioural analysis. Collaborating with marine research centres and resorts, this initiative aims to advance our understanding of marine behavioural ecology and broader ecological implications. The research will contribute to the understanding of the ecological importance of shark-fish interaction while pushing the boundaries of cutting-edge technology applied to collective behaviour and behavioural ecology.
