The added value of behavioral science in the COVID-19 crisis: An inside look into the Corona Behavioural Unit of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health & the Environment
The Corona Behavior Unit was installed in March 2020 in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is positioned within the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment and its primary purpose is to conduct research into the social scientific aspects of the pandemic (e.g. adherence to various guidelines, support for guidelines, mental wellbeing, risk perception, trust in the government, perceived procedural justice, et cetera). To that end, the unit conducts quantitative and qualitative research as well as literature research. A second purpose is to provide recommendations, based on social scientific evidence, for policy and communication to various governmental bodies. Dr. Marijn Stok has been associated with the Corona Behavior Unit since January 2021 and acts as liaison officer between the unit and the Dutch Crisis Communication Core Team, which is responsible for all COVID-19 related communication to the general public. In this talk, she will discuss the development of the unit, its working procedures, some core results, and important challenges and lessons learned.
