The Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior invites you to the talk of Hanna Kokko (University of Zurich + Mainz) who will deliver a seminar on “Spatial coevolution of males and females” at 10:30am on November 22nd.
You are welcome to attend the seminar online or in person at ZT702. After the talk, Hanna will be meeting with people from the community, so feel free to sign up for a meeting or to have lunch with Hanna.
Spatial coevolution of males and females
Populations are usually not panmictic, where every individual is equally likely to meet any other individual. I will present two modelling efforts to understand how this fact impacts (a) mate choice and (b) the effect of sexual dimorphism on species coexistence. The first model will look at local adaptation and how it might help us understand female choice for condition-dependent male traits. The second model comments on problems of coexistence that arise from sexual conflict theory. Males often deplete resources more (per capita) than do females, often without directly contributing to raising new offspring. I will reflect on the effects this has on the coexistence question when species additionally differ in which sex is the more dispersive sex.
