Speaker:

Have you ever wondered how experimental data can be transformed into art? Researchers from the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour (CASCB) and the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior have taken up this challenge with students from the Merz Akademie, University of Applied Art, Design and Media, Stuttgart.

The project focuses on the visualisation of and artistic experimentation with data. The art objects are based on real movement recordings of various animal species, e.g. data from fish or bird flocks of the Constance researchers. The students created seven interactive installations to immerse the visitors in animal behaviour.

The results include:
- A bat VR installation which allows visitors to experience the echolocation of bats.
- An interactive installation showing flocks of fish and birds.
- The journey of a stork from Lake Constance to Mauritania in an animated poster.
- Four exhibits ranging from a booklet to a VR installation on crabs. The focus is on waving, a gesture made by the animals to woo females during the mating season.

Opening ceremony of the exhibition: 13 May, 3pm

On Friday, 13 May 2022, 3 pm, the vernissage will take place at the University of Konstanz, Zt 702. On Saturday, 14 May 2022, the exhibition will be open to the public from 5 pm on as part of the Science Night in Konstanz (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft). Afterwards, a visit is possible after registration at cascb@uni.kn.
