Dr. Valentina Di Santo is currently Assistant Professor at Stockholm University where her lab, the Di Santo Lab, explores how abiotic factors alter the performance, behavior, and morphology of fishes. Most of her work focuses on the effect of climate change stressors, such as ocean warming, acidification and hypoxia on physiology and biomechanics of fish locomotion, including swimming, walking and schooling behavior. She also collaborates with engineers to develop bio-inspired underwater robots.
Climate change and locomotion: Insights into energetics and biomechanics of fishes
A major goal in conservation biology is to understandthe effects of short and long term environmental change on organisms. Fishes are the most valuable marine resource, however very little is known about the combined effect of climate-related stressors, body size, and local adaptation on their resilience. Myresearch investigates the effect of ocean acidification, warming, and hypoxia on fish locomotor performance. During my talk, I will discuss recent work on locomotion using skates, including the effect of temperature, ocean acidification and speed on energeticsand biomechanics of swimming.
