Speaker:
Dr. Helen McCreery, Harvard University

This event is part of an event series „CASCB Seminar Series Winter 2021/22“.

From molecular dynamics within cells to massive animal migrations, emergent group phenomena are ubiquitous and drive much of the complexity of the biological world. These phenomena often allow groups – even groups of simple individuals – to succeed at difficult tasks, such as nest construction and cohesive migration. I will discuss my research on the mechanisms and consequences of collective intelligence in groups of ants, which combines field experiments and mechanistic modeling. Specifically, I will share my work on collective problem-solving during cooperative transport in crazy ants, and the dynamic control of flexible, self-assembled bridges in army ants.
