Speaker:

We are inviting you to join the CASCB Researcher Meeting with a research delegation from the University of Essex on Monday, 16th May 2022 from 1:30 PM to 3:00PM in M628.

After the workshop there will be a coffee/snack break and guided tours to the Bahl lab (courtesy Max Capelle and Katja Slangewal) and the Imaging Hangar (courtesy Ahmed El Hady).

This event is organized by the International Offices of the University of Konstanz, but aims to be filled collectively with life by the cluster and a fruitful exchange with the visitors. Iain Couzin and the visiting group around Ed Codling have organized a successful online workshop in September 2021 („ Collective Systems“ ). Now the idea was to follow up on this workshop and build up on the previous discussions. That said, new people with an interest in the exchange are also very welcome to participate. The following researchers are part of the group: Prof. Edward Codling, Dr Gerrit Nanninga, Dr Delaram Jarchi, Dr Anna Sturrock, Dr Joseph Bailey and Dr Edward Hope. From the cluster community, several people have expressed their interest to attend: Thejasvi Beleyur, Ahmed El Hady, Jens Prüssner, Fumihiro Kano, Aya Goldshtein, Max Capelle, Katja Slangewal, Alex Jordan and others that have been contacted by the International Office directly. So this can also be a nice opportunity to mingle and socialize.

Here are some key areas of potential collaborations that emerged in the last workshop, plus areas of interest and expertise brought in by the visitors:

  • coral reefs (including fish behaviour and wider management/policy);
  • phenotype plasticity / "personality" and behaviour;
  • camouflage and perception and effects on decision-making during collective actions;
  • general sharing data (e.g. through joint PhDs)
  • fish movement and ecology (Dr. Sturrock)
  • (wearable) body sensors (Dr. Jarchi)
  • individual-level behavioural decisions on pathways of population connectivity and the way that anthropogenic activities may alter these processes (Dr. Nanninga)
  • movement ecology, development of theoretical models and empirical analysis tools that give insights into animal (including human) movement and behaviour at both the individual and collective level (Prof. Codling)
  • Mathematical biology/ecology, individual and group movement, random walk theory, movement and time-series data analysis (Dr. Bailey)

If you wish to present a short pitch about your work at the meeting, please get in touch with the organizer for further details: petia.popova@uni-konstanz.de

Volunteers to help with chairing the session can get in touch with me (alexandra.wild@uni-konstanz.de). This will be a wonderful opportunity for low-level session-hosting practice! It would be great if you could let us know if you´d like to come and give us a hint to your area of interest by Thursday May 12th!
